The ADACORSA Project has chosen an approach where work packages represent the R&D domains with a focus on technologies and methodology, while supply-chains represent experimental work and implementation efforts leading to the integration of the subsystems and their validation.

The project is split into 6 technical work packages (WP1 – WP6), work-package (WP7) that covers regulatory alignment, standardisation, exploitation, and stakeholders’ relations, due to the project’s high importance for generating impact and project management work-package (WP 8).



WP1: Requirements

In WP1, the system requirements for the ADACORSA technologies will be developed and their means for verification and validation identified. First, state-of-art for systems, operations and market will be collected, creating a common reference material for the full project. A high-level requirement (HLR) framework will be developed from the use cases from SC7 and SC8 and complemented with the external regulatory information being developed for drones operations in U-Space (SC10) and semi-conductor industry drivers (SC9). This HLR framework will ensure that the system and component level requirements, developed for each SC, will be able to interface and integrate for future deployment or exploitation beyond ADACORSA. Also, the major means for verification and validation will be specified. This will result in a unified reference document that collects the requirements and means of verification and validation. Due to the rapidly changing external landscape in the world of drones, an update to the reference document will be done at M20, before the major testing is developed. This will incorporate knowledge generated during the project and external changes related to the use cases and systems. This approach will improve the project results robustness regarding uptake and future exploitation.

WP 2: System Design

WP2 aims at creating a comprehensive understanding of systems and subsystems at the functional and component level, including information flows and interfaces. This will support the objective of developing designs at the component, system and architecture levels for technical enablers, and at the application level for final demonstrators. WP2 also will organise the design of procedures to enhance public and regulatory acceptance of BVLOS drone operations. Design procedures will be aimed at SORA approval for the largest part and aimed at eventual certification for selected designs based on requirements gathered in WP1.

WP 3: Electronic components

Within the standard V-model, this work package is at the lowest level. The main objective is to develop the hardware components of all modules, including semiconductors and electronics but also antenna designs, PCBs, the housing of individual components, mechanics, thermal design as well as optics for optical sensors such as LiDAR and 3D imagers. The developed components serve as the basis for the higher-level hardware and software/firmware development in WP4.

WP 4: Electronic components

The objective of WP4 is to implement the algorithms, methods technologies and all supporting software for supply chains SC1 – SC8 to enable BVLOS operations. The developed solutions will incorporate novel functionalities to meet SWaP requirements necessary for aviation. Thereby, WP4 provides embedded components for robust operation even under faulty conditions. WP4 builds on the incremental results from WP2 and WP3, which provides, e.g., the embedded computation platforms for the processing of LiDAR/Radar/3DI sensors. Furthermore, the integration of a multi-modular COTS connectivity concept using a resilient and high-performance firmware stack will be developed.

Attention will be paid especially to

- Fail-operational architecture on firmware level for DAA

- Computation platforms and algorithms for data-fusion based perception meeting SWaP requirements

- Reliable and secure communication and identification algorithms with a focus on UICCs, multi-modular links and resilient firmware implementation building on (anticipatory) QoS estimation

- Resilient and reliable onboard communication architecture

- Application (construction, forest and cargo) related soft- and firmware stacks, secure protocols and data exchange Interfaces

Results will be integrated in WP5 to the corresponding application demonstrators.

WP 5: System integration

In the previous work packages, critical points have been individually addressed to provide innovative solutions for increased reliability and availability, functional safety, cost reduction, and improved functionalities. The objective of this work package is the integration of all the developed solutions for all the supply chains described in the previous sections, testing them and demonstrating their practical viability on a test bench or in an industrial environment.

WP5 aims to integrate and implement a fail-operational safety architecture capable to detect and avoid any emergency and risky faults, adaptively merging perception and control for autonomous drones. We will use the information of failure modes and other components as a constraint in the decision-making framework. This work package will also address the realization of the demonstrators by horizontally incorporating activities and results of the other work packages. A hardware-in-the-loop setup will be realized for the industrial demonstrators. The integration of the components at the system level, coupled with new techniques, architectures, hardware and software for data acquisition, relay, data fusion, and content analysis will enable innovative use-cases targeted to all ADACORSA supply chains.

WP 6: Validation, test and demonstration

WP6 is focused on test, verification and validation of the ADACORSA technology stack and application-oriented solutions. The systems and sub-systems integrated and tested in WP5 will be evaluated.
The functionality and behaviour will be tested and evaluated against requirements from WP1 and analysed concerning alignment with industrial impact needs for the user and regulatory acceptance (SC9 and SC10).
The WP6 will test and validate individual software and hardware components (SC1 – SC4) as well as the integrated systems (SC5 – SC8). To make the tests repeatable, they will follow the written test procedures. The test procedures will be designed to enable validation of both functional and non¬functional requirements. The test results will help to justify for each KPI whether it was met or not.
The WP6 demonstrators of supply chains SC9 and SC10 will verify whether their results and objectives have been met. Each supply chain will demonstrate its results in several demonstrators.

WP 7: Regulatory alignment, standardisation, exploitation, and stakeholder relations

The objectives of this WP are:

· Definition and execution of exploitation strategies in order to ensure the applicability and efficiency of the developed technologies, prototypes, and new components;

· Definition and execution of dissemination and communication activities to make the research activities and the progress of technological developments and innovative solutions visible to external communities with potential interest in the project outcomes;

· Facilitating the uptake of the ADACORSA technologies through regulatory alignment and standardization efforts.

WP 8: Project management

The objectives of this work package include the following aspects:

· Overall project management; legal requirements and contracts, timely and efficient implementation of the work plan and continuous monitoring of all project activities, including tracking of milestones, deliverables and the demonstrators issued from the supply chains

· Trusted communication with the Programme Officer, with the consortium, with external experts and the public audience, including progress reporting (i.e. reviews, periodic and final reports)

· Administrative management of the project, including distribution of the financial contribution to the consortium (through the Coordinator) according to the Grant Agreement; assistance in obtaining certificates on the financial statements from each of the participants; keep records and financial accounts as well as inform the ECSEL JU of its distribution

· Monitor that all relevant rules and regulations
